Cathy Goodale is a dedicated, persistent, and educated artist whose style reflects her individuality.  “If you pay attention, art transcends all parts of life and makes the ordinary things in life “a painting”.  Her career has been filled with painting, teaching and learning. The demand for excellence, painting in oil and watercolor, continues to drive all of her endeavors and her imagination pushes her to paint past her "artistic safe places".

Growing up in Denver, Colorado, with an early introduction to art classics through her grandmother was instrumental in leading Cathy to Stephens College in Missouri and to a degree in Fine Arts from the University of Northern Colorado. She continued her art training at Denver University, studying commercial art under William Sanderson.

James Biggers is never satisfied painting the same subject in the same way. He forces himself to learn and see more while constantly searching for inspirations and techniques to give his paintings essence. A strong sense of design that is evident in his paintings was developed during his work as a graphic artist. Biggers discovered, "at some point you have to put something of yourself into your work, without this element you will never have a great painting. Design and the subject may attract people to your painting, heart is what keeps them there." He strives to give his paintings depth so that the viewer can go beyond what initially drew them into the work of art. "Capturing a frozen moment in time with great emotion is what we do as an artist."

ABOUT THIS WORKSHOP

Two instructors in oil or watercolor. With Cathy Goodale and James Biggers you will get all the "one on one" instruction you want with an emphasis on reliable art basics. A great schedule for side travel - 3 days of instructed painting - 2 days off - 2 days of instructed painting. Different location every day for painting inspiration and photographing.

You will be met at Palma Airport, and we will travel to our hotel in Valldemossa. The first evening we will have a get-together where we go through the program of the week and you get a chance to meet our instructor, fellow artists, trip leader and staff.

Each morning, after breakfast on the deck, we will set off and visit one of the island's many alluring places. Cathy and Jim will guide us along as we paint the scenery, capturing the essence of each place. We break for lunch and continue painting into the afternoon.

Some of the places we will visit are:

Fornalutx, one of the prettiest villages of Spain, with its cobbled streets and terracotta roofs, surrounded by well tended orange and lemon groves. The artist town of Deia, home to celebrities such as Michael Douglas, perched in a ravine at the foot of the Teix mountain, with views out to the Mediterranean below and with an interesting museum dedicated to the writer Robert Graves. Valldemossa, once a home for Frederic Chopin and George Sands, with art galleries, a 400 year old olive estate, outdoor cafes and restaurants. Soller, a charming town with an impressive cathedral, dating from the 1200s and a botanical garden with many endangered local plant species. Puerto de Soller, a fishing village that can be reached via a vintage train that travels on a wooden narrow-gauge electric railway, which crosses the Sierra de Alfàbia mountain range with a series of tunnels, bridges, viaducts and bends. Palma, once a laid-back capital, now a cosmopolitan city, with a bustling city center and a preserved old town.

During our evenings we will explore the island's cuisine, trying tapas, pinxtos and paella!

Our week will include two days "off" in the middle of the program. During these two days there will opportunities to go on guided hikes in the Tramuntana mountain range, explore the villages on e-bike, visit the cosmopolitan capital of Palma or individually tour other parts of the island.

Mallorca has a Mediterranean climate, with 300 sunny days per year. Spring and fall are the best times to travel, explore, and paint around the island. April and May are usually two of the nicest months to visit with plenty of sunny days.

Our base will be in Valldemossa, one of the small, picturesque towns in the Tramuntana mountain range on the west coast of the island, in the middle of orange groves, olive trees, and open terraces.
