Monica Kane will be our instructor in Mallorca! Monica is a freelance illustrator and textile designer obsessed with watercolor. Originally from Venezuela, Monica now calls Kansas City home, after relocating from Philadelphia with her family.
She graduated with a BFA from Temple University, Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia, PA and worked as a designer for Hallmark for nearly a decade, exploring art everyday alongside so many fellow creatives.
Creating patterns, painting flowers and inventing new color schemes are what she loves doing the most, always mixing up the classics with a bit of whimsical imperfection.
Her inspiration comes from nature and traveling. Her motto, in the words of her all time favorite artist William Morris: "Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful." To see more of her work visit her website at monicakanedesign.com.

ABOUT THIS WORKSHOP

This watercolor workshop in Mallorca is intended for anyone getting started with watercolor painting and who would benefit from a better understanding of watercolor techniques to gain confidence. In this beginner class you will learn a multitude of techniques as we explore beautiful Mallorca and get inspired by our surroundings.

To help facilitate the learning process, we will do demos, practices, warm ups, and complete simple projects each morning so that you can test your skills on your own and bring your new work back for afternoon critiques and conversations.

The medium of watercolor can be challenging and has a reputation for not being as “forgiving” as other mediums – but by learning the basic techniques early on, students will be able to avoid making many of the mistakes that beginners often do. You will be watching daily demonstrations, learning many basic techniques, practicing what you have learned on location in the small villages of Mallorca, and enjoying the camaraderie with fellow beginner painters!

You will be met at Palma Airport, and we will travel to our hotel in Valldemossa. The first evening we will have a get-together where we go through the program of the week and you get a chance to meet Monica, fellow artists, trip leader and staff.

During the week we will explore the island, its many scenic areas - from the gorgeous views over the Mediterranean Sea to the small quaint villages in the Tramuntana mountain range.

Some of the places we will visit are:

Fornalutx, one of the prettiest villages of Spain, with its cobbled streets and terracotta roofs, surrounded by well tended orange and lemon groves. The artist town of Deia, home to celebrities such as Michael Douglas, perched in a ravine at the foot of the Teix mountain, with views out to the Mediterranean below and with an interesting museum dedicated to the writer Robert Graves. Valldemossa, once a home for Frederic Chopin and George Sands, with art galleries, a 400 year old olive estate, outdoor cafes and restaurants. Soller, a charming town with an impressive cathedral, dating from the 1200s and a botanical garden with many endangered local plant species. Puerto de Soller, a fishing village that can be reached via a vintage train that travels on a wooden narrow-gauge electric railway, which crosses the Sierra de Alfàbia mountain range with a series of tunnels, bridges, viaducts and bends. Palma, once a laid-back capital, now a cosmopolitan city, with a bustling city center and a preserved old town.

This immersive Mallorca workshop will be packed with confidence-building tips on color mixing, composition, and more that you can apply to your paintings back home!

ABOUT MALLORCA

The island of Mallorca has always attracted painters, writers, poets, musicians and other artists. Some famous historical people who have chosen to make Mallorca their home include Frederic Chopin, Joan Miro, Robert Graves and of course current day tennis champion Rafael Nadal!

The island offers everything from large city living in the capital Palma to quaint village life in small towns like Deia, Fornalutx and Valldemossa.

Our base will be in Valldemossa, one of the small, picturesque towns in the Tramuntana mountain range on the west coast of the island, in the middle of orange groves, olive trees, and open terraces.
