A Plein Air Oil Painting Workshop with Dena Peterson

Join Dena Peterson, painter for the 2018 Oscar-nominated film, Loving Vincent, as she paints the beautiful scenery of Mallorca, Spain. “My goal for this workshop is to help you to simplify the magnificent vistas before you, in order to capture the essence that is Mallorca.” Lectures, demonstrations, and painting on location will be the daily itinerary as you learn the basics of painting en plein air in a supportive environment with lots of personal attention.

Dena Peterson

An award-winning artist, Dena Peterson’s paintings have been exhibited in regional, national, and international shows. She received her training at the Loveland Academy of Fine Arts, the Art Students League of Denver, and the Scottsdale Artists School, where she was selected for the prestigious Wade Fairchild Memorial Scholarship.

Our lodging: Es Petit

Es Petit Hotel is a small hotel with a perfect location in the center of Valldemossa. Coffee shops, restaurants, boutiques, and art galleries are located right outside the hotel. The deck with magnificent views overlooking the valley will be our gathering point in the afternoons as we return from our daily painting excursions.

About the area

The island of Mallorca has always attracted painters, writers, poets, musicians and other artists. Some artists who have chosen to make Mallorca their home include Frederic Chopin, Joan Miro, and the writer Robert Graves!

The island offers everything from large city living in the capital Palma to quaint village life in small towns like Deia, Fornalutx and Valldemossa.

Please note that we recommend using water soluble oils for this workshop. Many people are switching to these type of oils today and they are perfect for traveling.

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP AND THE AREA:

During this week in Mallorca, we will explore the island, its many scenic areas - from the gorgeous views over the Mediterranean Sea to the small quaint towns in the Tramuntana mountain range:

Fornalutx, one of the prettiest villages of Spain, with its cobbled streets and terracotta roofs, surrounded by well-tended orange and lemon groves. The artist town of Deia, home to celebrities such as Michael Douglas, perched in a ravine at the foot of the Teix mountain, with views out to the Mediterranean below and with an interesting museum dedicated to the writer Robert Graves. Valldemossa, once a home for Frederic Chopin and George Sands, with art galleries, a 400 year old olive estate, outdoor cafes and restaurants. Soller, a charming town with an impressive cathedral, dating from the 1200s and a botanical garden with many endangered local plant species. Palma, once a laid-back capital, now a cosmopolitan city, with a bustling city center and a preserved old town.
